Singapore, y u liddis?
Warning, triggered post. All this talk about the US Presidential Elections got me thinking about GE2020. It was so stupid, seriously. At the start of the elections, I saw my friend turn from average Singaporean to political activist overnight. Btw, it’s been 2–3 months and he still hasn’t stopped.
The last I checked (this morning), he’s still firing political drivel on his social media accounts. Badly designed memes. Ugly infographics. Poorly doctored photos. Mentally-inclined captions. He even tagged the Obamas in one of his posts, asking them to look into Singapore’s democracy. Last night, he just started a petition to ask our PM to resign (seriously?). Lol okay.
Let’s get this first: Politics is politics. It’s unfair, it’s heated, it’s dirty. And I don’t think politicians are saints la right.
BUT STILL… I cannot stand you voting the same way you vote for your government the same way you vote for your high school council president… because he or she could play the guitar and sing well. Jamus fans, I’m looking at YOU. Your heart was won over by his “blank cheque” and “cockles of my heart” video snippets. How many of you actually followed the subsequent debates after that episode? Anyway those are over and it is onto parliament now.
It’s okay to give him a term to prove his mettle… but you can’t give him a blank cheque too ya? Have you seen the minimum wage take the homeless off the street in any country? How effective is it really? Is the progressive wage model working? Maybe. What I’m saying is… it’s stupid to derail a plan because you don’t like it.
If you want to scrutinise, scrutinise both sides.
If you want to evaluate merit, evaluate both sides.
If you want to make bad memes, make them for both sides.
